Local Trade Idea - OUTsurance Group (OUT) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein & Motheo Tlhagale

We initiate a long position with a target price of R99.00 and recommend a stop-loss at R82.00.

OUTsurance Group is an investment holding company that holds a diversified portfolio of strategic investments in some of South Africa's premier insurance and finance brands, including a 90% stake in OUTsurance Holdings - one of South Africa's leading short-term and life insurance providers, offering innovative personal, business, and health insurance products through a direct-to-consumer model. Known for its customer-centric approach and features like the popular OUTbonus reward for claim-free clients, the group leverages technology and data analytics to deliver competitive premiums and efficient service.

The business also operates internationally through Youi in Australia and OUTsurance Ireland, which launched in 2024, positioning it as a trusted and growing presence in global insurance markets.

Technically, the developing Wave 5 structure under Elliott Wave theory makes the share an interesting long candidate, as it suggests the potential for a final advance within the broader uptrend following the completion of Wave 4 (see number notation on the main chart). If the wave count is correct, the price could continue towards or above the Wave 3-high, supporting further upside potential.

The AI model forecast supports the trade idea by projecting a constructive upward price trajectory over the medium-to-longer term. While the forecast remains within normal volatility ranges in the near term, it points to progressively higher price levels over the three-, six- and 12-month horizons, reinforcing the bullish outlook. Although the projections are estimates rather than guaranteed outcomes, the model's positive bias provides additional support.

The share remains above its 200-day simple moving average (SMA) at R74.33, reinforcing the positive long term trend and suggesting that the moving average continues to act as an important area of support. As long as the price holds above this level, the broader technical outlook remains constructive and supports the bullish trade thesis.

Upside potential is expected to be supported by continued customer growth across its South African and Australian operations, disciplined pricing, and increasing scale benefits from its direct-insurance model.

Buy/sell rationale

Technical analysis:

    • The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD indicator supports the trade idea, with the MACD line having recovered from negative territory and moving above the zero line, signalling improving momentum. The MACD line also remains slightly above the signal line, suggesting that the positive momentum trend remains intact and continuing to support a bullish bias, although confirmation should still be considered alongside price action and volume trends.
    • The recent upward trend in the On-Balance Volume (OBV) indicator supports a positive view on the share, as it suggests that buying volume has been outweighing selling volume, pointing to accumulating investor demand. This improving volume profile reinforces the bullish case and indicates that the share's advance is being supported by underlying market participation, provided the upward trend in OBV continues.
    • Our entry range is between R85.50 to R87.80 with an upside target set at R99.00 (+14.3% from current levels).
    • A price below R82.00 (-5.3% from current levels) is a major concern for downside potential and is recommended as a stop-loss.
    • Time to exit is late January 2027. Keep the option open to close the trade if the price reaches our profit target in a shorter time.

Long-term fundamental view:

    • OUTsurance has been a strong performer in the local market and has consistently gained market share in the past.
    • The company offers geographical diversification through its presence in Australia. We also like the expansion into Ireland where economic growth is strong, and insurance rates are low.
    • FY26 earnings exceeded consensus expectations, with normalised earnings per share rising 18.3% and net income increasing 19%, supported by strong premium growth and an exceptional performance from the SA operations.
    • Despite start-up losses in Ireland, cost efficiencies at OUTsurance SA and Youi helped offset these pressures. Operationally, the group benefitted from premium growth, favourable claims trends, and higher investment income. OUTsurance Life stood out with strong growth and improved efficiency.
    • A notable dividend uplift, including a special dividend, signalled management's confidence in the group's financial strength and growth trajectory going forward.
    • Risk to our fundamental view include further material deterioration in the South African macroeconomic environment, regulatory pressure, and growing competition. OUTsurance has a low free-float, therefore liquidity remains a risk. Short-term insurers are particularly vulnerable to weather-related events and other uncontrollable factors.
